media assessment
Our media work was to create a front cover and double page
spread of a music magazine. I used many codes and conventions in my magazine. My
genre of music was punk and skinhead music. The code and conventions used where
distinctive and recognizable colors for the target audience as they would see
them and immediately recognize them/it as a punk rock magazine. The colors
used are the likes of pinks yellows black and whites. The pink and yellow is to
represent attention, which punks and skins get a lot. It also links to probably
the most famous punk album of all time “never mind the b******* here’s the sex
pistols” which is very iconic. I’m sure this will meet audience expectations. The
main image is of my friend, Bog, with very wacky and messed up hair as punk is
seen as very messy and rugged in appearance. This appeals to the target
audience as it meets their expectations. My questionnaire told me that a
reasonable price for a magazine was 2 – 3 pounds so I put on my front cover a
bar code with £2.50 on it as this met the expectations of the people I asked and
the audience as it is a reasonable price in my opinion. My analysis heavily influenced
my layout as it had a black and white background to show punk and skinhead go back
a long time so I thought it was rather fitting and met the audiences
aspirations. My target audience is for people any age and any gender who listen
to punk and skinhead music and just want more information on the culture
upcoming gigs and interviews with iconic bands. I would like my magazine to be
published by NME because they do all kinds of music but because of my
researched I have realized whenever they do a magazine similar to mine and I have
based a lot of my work around designs however most of it is legitimate.
My focus group session was with my friend Marcus lam. In this
session he answered my questions. He said that the color was rather fitting
and met the target audience expectations as a whole, the codes and conventions
where ones he would see on a real punk magazine he quoted. He said there was
more to do on the punk parts of it (image wise). So I took pictures of my
friend Boj Gonzaga with all his hair messy and in punk rock poses inspired by
the likes of Johnny rotten Iggy pop and Sid vicious I had found in my research
on punk magazines. These poses met the codes and conventions as the target
audience of punks and skinheads will instantly recognize the pose and see it is
a punk magazine. However the picture of him posing is inside of the magazine so
it will keep them hooked and want to read about it. I also chose Boj without
sounding weird but because he is Asian and it will symbolize that punks and
skinheads are not racist despite what people think and that no matter what age
ethnicity or gender you can still be whatever you want to be without being
judged. This goes against the social stereotypes of skinheads being racist. Especially
to the Asian race as depicted in the film “ROMPER STOMPER” so I think it is
good Boj was in the pictures because it challenged social stereotypes.

double page spread analysis
my magazine is the one on skinheads. mine is similar to the professional one because of the colour scheme of black and white to look old fashioned. I like this touch. I have changed my one to have columns because it looks more professional as the real magazine has one therefore looking smarter and more real. however I believe mine needs improvement because I need first hand of my punk and skinhead friends who will pose. I have chose to take them as closeups so it will look better much like the pictures of john lydon in the magazinesas it looks very cool up close. I will soon put in a little bit of colour to kind of shadow the professional magazine like the purple at the bottom of it.
